CERAMIC COATING 101
What is marine ceramic coating?
Marine ceramic coating is a protective layer that bonds to properly prepared surfaces, helping reduce water spotting, improve cleaning, and provide long-lasting protection against environmental exposure.
How long does ceramic coating last?
The lifespan depends on the coating used, environmental conditions, and maintenance. Regular washing and proper care help maximize its durability.
Is ceramic coating better than wax?
Ceramic coatings generally offer greater durability and longer-lasting protection than traditional waxes. However, the quality of the surface preparation is just as important as the coating itself.
Can ceramic coating be applied to an oxidized boat?
Not immediately. The surface must first be restored to remove oxidation and imperfections so the coating can bond properly.
Does ceramic coating eliminate maintenance?
No. Ceramic coating reduces maintenance and makes cleaning easier, but boats still require routine washing and inspections.
What Surfaces Can Be Ceramic Coated?
Depending on the product used, ceramic coatings may be suitable for:GelcoatPainted surfacesGlassStainless steelMetal trimPlastic trim
Always use products designed for the specific surface being treated.
Can Ceramic Coating Hide Scratches?
No.Ceramic coating is designed to protect a properly prepared surface, not conceal scratches or oxidation. Surface correction should be completed before installation.
Why is Surface Preparation So Important?
Ceramic coating performs best when applied to a clean, defect-free surface.Preparation may include:WashingDecontaminationCompoundingPolishingPaint or gelcoat correction
A coating can only protect the condition of the surface beneath it.
Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Water Spots?
Ceramic coatings help reduce water spotting by increasing water repellency, but they cannot completely prevent spots if mineral-rich water is allowed to dry on the surface.
